For the past three years, we’ve grown our capacity to deliver a diverse programme of activation elements to the main streets of Kalgoorlie and Boulder. Supported financially by the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder, the project has allowed for meaningful development and performance opportunities for local creative practitioners in a range of disciplines, whilst providing out-of-the-ordinary experiences for visitors and tourists whilst encouraging prolonged City experiences that drive social and economic benefit.
For us, these activities transcend entertainment. The project represents a cultural shift towards acceptance of the unexpected, and an appreciation for the benefit of surprise and delight in our everyday lives.
In addition to a comprehensive performance programme for the 2018 festive period, we produced physical activation elements — seating, shade, and ping pong table — to provide the community a more vibrant place to be immersed.
This year’s street activation entertainment saw the production of CBD Shop Hop Beats, where live music was performed as a tour’, using retail shops as the performance venues. Participating retailers enjoyed a unique placemaking concept as well as associated ‘tour’ advertising.
We also delivered an extensive schedule of street performances and activities in addition to utilising a temporary stage installed in St Barbara’s Square.
We were engaged by the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder to programme musicians for two street performances, with the aim of encouraging shopping local during the Christmas trading period. The initiative ran on a late night shopping Thursday, and midday on Boxing Day in order to stimulate public interest in visiting and shopping in the CBD. The programme was met with overwhelming support from shoppers who enjoyed the vibrancy that the performance art added to the otherwise quiet street fronts.
